ark Everard is one of the best anglers for coarse fish you will come across in any part of the world. He is also a PhD and an acknowledged specialist on the life history of British fishes. His great passion is catching large roach but, on the occasion that led to the extraordinary sequence of events described here, he was after pike. They were not particularly huge pike where he was fishing, but he hoped he might have the chance of a 20-pounder if things went his way.

Patrick stood up, removed his cap and scratched his head.
‘Be Jesus, Mister Schmidt, sir, them eels of yours, I can only think they must have eaten one another!’
