At that time of year, the sun went down quickly and it was quite dark by 6 o’clock. Mark climbed out of the fighting chair and took hold of the marlin’s bill, which enabled Don to use both hands to work the hook free.
‘No problem, I take pictures,’ said a heavily accented voice from behind. Mark looked back over his shoulder to see a grinning Japanese taking photographs.
‘Okay, that’s enough,’ Don said. ‘Let her go back now.’
The fish stayed beside the boat looking at them for a few moments, then sank down, twisted away and disappeared.
The Japanese shook Mark’s hand vigorously. ‘Very good. We catch huge fish, yes?’
Mark made all
‘That’s one hell of a fish, too,’ said Steve. ‘Biggest tarpon I’ve ever seen, on this or any other boat out of the Keys.’
Colin had dropped the rod and was leaning on the boat, muscles screaming with exhaustion but with an unbelievable feeling of achievement in his head. Adrenalin was coursing round his veins faster than he had never experienced before, and he couldn’t speak for the moment. He was just staring down at the monstrous tarpon in front of him.
