The sea lion seemed to have finished the tail because it was now swimming at some speed after the rest of the fish. Barbara realised with horror that she was actually fishing for a sea lion with about 25 pounds of front-end king salmon as bait.

In the mid-1970s, a Mr Chevalier hooked a big fish in April in the upper river, but lost it after half an hour. The other guest was next to take a fish, a carbon copy of James’s sailfish and one that met a similar fate. It was then Peter’s turn to be strapped into the fighting chair and it wasn’t long before something big hit his bonito bait. He leant back into the fish and waited for another spectacular tail-walk across the surface, but that didn’t happen this time.

Peter was just about to say something about releasing the fish when one of the crewmen leant over the side and clubbed the sailfish to death with a weighted wooden cosh. He and a colleague sank gaffs into its flanks and hauled it aboard. Catch and release didn’t seem to be first priority with the crew, so Peter bit his tongue on the subject, despite James’s obvious disappointment that his quarry had had to die.
‘Nice fish,’ shouted the skipper from the wheelhouse. ‘About 60, 70 pounds.’

Bill’s passion for the river inevitably rubbed off on John and, when he was old enough, they would fish together for salmon, sea trout and trout. FROM WHITEHALL TO THE GREAT BARRIER REEF
Out on the edge of the reef, Martin fished plastic lures on spinning gear and was immediately hit by a big, 22-pound Spanish mackerel, which fought even harder than the Sydney kingfish. They were then surrounded by schools of bonito and tuna driving baitfish up to the surface and providing fantastic sport on the light spinning gear, hitting the lures as though they were the last food items out in the ocean.
