Alas, the hook didn’t hold for long and just pulled free, almost certainly, the ghillie told him later, because it was a tired fish that only took the big tube fly half-heartedly in the first place. That was often the way with running spring fish that had to battle their way through rough water between pools. They would take the fly if it crossed in front of their noses, but you had to be lucky to keep them on for long.
Slightly chastened by the experience, Ben walked downstream to find Richard sitting forlornly on a rock beside one of the lower pools.

‘That’s a shark in the water!’ cried Steve. ‘It’s attacking the damn boat, for God’s sake!’
‘And that’s half a tarpon on the stern,’ said Peter, looking through his binoculars.
It transpired that the boat had landed an estimated 80-pound tarpon and, while the captain was trying to release it, a 12-foot lemon shark had come from nowhere and slashed it in half. Even though the crew were fighting it off with the boat hooks, the shark seemed determined to grab the rest of the fish, although it finally gave up and swam away, leaving about 40 pounds of front-end
‘I can see it! Four more yards my way and I can get it!’
Hughie wound down the rod tip, the line now seemingly running through the middle of the bush, then hauled back and shipped two boots full of water over the back of his waders. His arm muscles were screaming and he had no idea what was happening the other end. Then the fish started bouncing the rod around and he had to start playing it all over again.
‘For god’s sake, Hughie, give me some line! Slacken off completely!’
Bewildered by the command, Hughie let the line go and waited for further instruc
