‘Be ready to cast out your bait,’ said Gagan, ‘right into the middle of the fish. One of them will most definitely take the sheep meat.’
In went the charred timber and what was left of the sheep, the pungent smell of burnt mutton pervading the air. Mark waited, poised for the action to start.

He leant over the side and clasped the marlin round the base of the bill with one hand and the wire trace with the other.
‘…try to control this bugger. Can you unhitch yourself and give me a hand here?’
Mark climbed out of the fighting chair and took hold of the marlin’s bill, which enabled Don to use both hands to work the hook free.
‘No problem, I take pictures,’ said a heavily accented voice from behind. Mark looked back over his shoulder to see a grinning Japanese taking photographs.

Will I ever Learn to Swim?

If you are reading this now I am assuming you are considering taking adult swimming lessons, and like most other adults reading this page you will have concerns. Let me just list a few of the comments we get from would-be adult swimmers over and over and over again.

  • I’m the odd one out. Everyone else can swim.
  • My legs sink. Swimming lessons just don’t work for me.
  • I just can’t put my face in the water.
  • If I take swimming lessons, will I have to go in the deep end? Panic!!!
  • I’m not just an adult – I’m way too old.
  • Adult swimming lessons for men are embarrassing.

The list is endless but largely there are many many reasons why people manage to talk themselves out of taking adult swimming lessons. As of today, we haven’t met one single person that can’t learn to swim as an adult no matter what their age or perceived problems.

Children that are Frightened> Being afraid isn’t a reason to let your child avoid swimming lessons. It’s normal to be afraid of the water, for some more than others. You don’t want to force your child to take swimming lessons but letting them duck out won’t work either.

How Long Before my Child Learns to Swim?

When teaching children to swim it is important to remember that they should learn at their own pace. They will not develop confidence if they do not trust their teacher, and they will not enjoy the water if they are forced in before they are ready. Some students learn at a quicker pace than others, but in the end they all usually learn to swim as well as each other.

Baby swimming classes usually start at around 6 months although many recommend not till 12 months. Babies can be taken swimming immediately after giving birth! The NHS advises that babies can be taken swimming at any age but under 6 months, a large public pool is too cold for a baby.

‘It is nearly time. There, look!’
The fire was burnt down by now to glowing cinders, a few charred timbers and goodness knows what else left in the middle of it all. Some of the menfolk now came forward and proceeded to push the smoking remnants from the shallow margin into the swirling currents of the main river. As the smouldering debris hit the water, the most amazing thing happened. The water began to boil as fish of all sizes rolled on the surface, slashing at what was coming down into the water from the funeral pyre.

‘Hey!’ Mark looked around to make sure no one else was listening. ‘Pity we can’t fish down there now. I mean, that’s what you call serious ground baiting, isn’t it?’
Gagan put a hand on his shoulder. ‘Now, it’s extremely interesting you should say that, because there’s something I’ve wanted to do here for a very long time. If you are agreeable, I think that time has arrived.’ MAHSEER AND FUNERAL PYRES

‘No, no, no!’ Gagan laughed and clapped him on the back. ‘But I have

‘Let go!’ Steve shouted, and the boatman obeyed, allowing the fish to spring clear.
However, rather than dive away to safety, it proceeded to swim slowly round the boat, eyeing up the two men while it continued to shake its head and rid itself of the final pieces of plastic. Then, with a great slash of its tail, it dived away out of sight and was gone.
The boatman was grinning inanely, out of sheer relief rather than with humour, Steve suspected. The man reached out his hand.
‘Very good, sir. Bloody glad it wasn’t great white, though.’
