The bumpy 4×4 trip out to the Buller system showed up the stunning variety of the island’s landscape, a rich tapestry of rainforest, rivers, lakes and towering, snow-capped mountains and glaciers. It was the most fantastic backdrop to a fishing trip that John could imagine and he was already looking at the place from a producer’s eye. Even before he wet a line, he knew this would make a fantastic episode for The Take.
At the lodge, he was introduced to his guide, John Gendall, who looked at him and then his tackle.

This continued for some while until the fish eventually broke free. Gaurav came back, shaking his head but still grinning.
‘You see, the goonch has very strong whiskers either side of its mouth. They are not ordinary barbels; they are supported by bone and powerful muscles. So when the fish is hooked, it looks for crevices in between the rocks where it can anchor itself with its whiskers. Once it is rooted, there is only one way to shift it.’

AMAZING FISHING STORIES
There was an inlet to the shore where a boat had been pulled up onto the grass. The bank had been worn down there and was shallower than anywhere else. There was a bush between them and it, but it was the only place they had a chance of beaching the fish.
