‘Nice fish,’ shouted the skipper from the wheelhouse. ‘About 60, 70 pounds.’
The other guest was next to take a fish, a carbon copy of James’s sailfish and one that met a similar fate. It was then Peter’s turn to be strapped into the fighting chair and it wasn’t long before something big hit his bonito bait. He leant back into the fish and waited for another spectacular tail-walk across the surface, but that didn’t happen this time.
Instead, the fish stayed deep, feeling very heavy and powerful.
‘Could it be a marlin?’ he asked.
‘Might be,’ said one

Thank goodness for elephants! There was a shout from someone at the other end of the boat and I turned to see a big herd emerge from the trees. The young ones led the charge, running as fast as their tired legs would carry them and practically diving into the river in their frenzy to drink. The older animals seemed more cautious, especially with us humans watching them from the cat, which the guide had gently driven into the beach so that we were stationary. But then the whole herd reached the river. We were literally surrounded by drinking elephants and it was

because there was silence in the coracle, except for the noise of the rapids as they sped through them.
Steve’s idea of a Ferrari was very apt. The fish towed them much faster than the river’s flow, so that they literally tore through the first rapid like a speedboat, through a short pool, then into a second, boulder-strewn shallow reach where the inevitable happened: the line became entangled round several rocks as the fish picked a route between them. Steve was desperate that the line shouldn’t chaff on the boulders, but Saban and Bola controlled the coracl

Duncan then managed to turn the fish towards him, and was able to pump it back to the boat. Percy eased them into the shore, then jumped out and gaffed the fish up onto the beach. They roped it through the gills and round the tail, and then called in the Sea Pigeon to haul it back into harbour.
In the boathouse, a pair of old scales, weighing up to 1000 pounds, hung from a wooden rafter. Duncan and Percy dragged the fish into the shed, stuck a steel hook into its gills and hauled it up onto the scales. As soon as its tail was clear of the floor, the needle sh

Steve flew back to London with the rest of the party and reported early on Monday morning to the Accident and Emergency department of St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He sat down among a motley collection of drunks, fight victims, children who had various youthful ailments and even a group of scaffolders who had fallen off a collapsing building. It was a far cry from the frozen Russian wilderness, but his ribs and face were still very painful and he had to get something done about them. He settled down for the notoriously long wait endured by patients at major London

However, the opportunity to go fishing beyond the reef finally won the struggle, and Peter and James joined a boat heading out of Malindi with a skipper and three crewmen. The other guests were a married couple, although the side effects of malaria tablets kept the wife lying in the wheelhouse, quietly moaning, for the entire trip, so there were only three anglers to share whatever spoils the Indian Ocean had to offer.
Just beyond the reef, they had great fun for half an hour catching small bonito. Knowing that James was an ardent conservationist who was agai

Suffice to say that Peter’s family stuck firmly to the hotel’s swimming pool for the rest of their stay.
GREEDY AUSTRALIAN TROUT
The eternal question of whether or not fish feel pain when hooked and played on a rod and line will probably never be answered satisfactorily until humans learn to converse with aquatic life. Or will it?
any biologists suggest that fish do not have the required sensory system to feel as humans do, especially in mouths that have no nerves. However, others use elaborate tests, such as injecting bee venom into a laboratory rainbo

Alongside the jetty, his worst fears were manifest as he realised that every other boat had caught something. There were either grilse or sea trout for all but his own boat. He jumped ashore.
‘Patrick, ze bag, if you please!’ shouted Herr Schmidt, and started gabbling away in German to his wife, who had come to greet him.
‘Here you are, Mist… Oh dear, there doesn’t appear to be anything in it, to be sure.’
‘Vot? Zere must be, Patrick. Vot has happened to my eels?’

‘Where did you spend the night?’ O’Reilly asked.
‘Old Maire took me into her cottage and looked after me.’
The car screeched to a halt so abruptly that Charles nearly hit his head on the windscreen.
Charles told his story to an increasingly incredulous O’Reilly. When he had finished, the man said nothing, turned the car round and drove back the other way. Charles asked him a couple of times where they were going, but the proprietor remained silent and stony faced.
They reached the track and turned down towards the cottage, the car bouncing around on

The bears vanished into the undergrowth and showed no signs of returning. Even so, Peter spent a long, nervous and sleepless night listening out for prowling predators, not to mention his companions’ carefree snoring. As soon as dawn broke, he gingerly stuck his head out of the tent and there, sure enough, were the three bears again, just 200 yards from the camp catching field voles.
‘I guess a bear’s gotta do what a bear’s gotta do,’ he thought ruefully, mimicking Steve’s voice in his head. He just prayed that vole hunting would keep the animals occupied for

He was halfway down the pool when Simon appeared.
‘Any luck?’ asked Hughie.
‘Another dark sea trout, but no salmon. I’ve seen plenty, but they just won’t take.’
‘The fish are getting twitchy with this rise in water; they’re head and tailing all over the place up here, so I reckon one’s got to take in a minute. Fish down behind me.’
No sooner had he said it than Hughie had a good draw on the line as the fly reached mid-channel. He lifted the rod and was into a fish, at which point, about 15 yards below, a very stale sea trout of 4 or 5 pounds leapt cl

FROM WHITEHALL TO THE GREAT BARRIER REEF
Out on the edge of the reef, Martin fished plastic lures on spinning gear and was immediately hit by a big, 22-pound Spanish mackerel, which fought even harder than the Sydney kingfish. They were then surrounded by schools of bonito and tuna driving baitfish up to the surface and providing fantastic sport on the light spinning gear, hitting the lures as though they were the last food items out in the ocean. Later, fishing closer to the bottom, he hooked into something that he just couldn’t hold, which finally broke his
