ark Everard is one of the best anglers for coarse fish you will come across in any part of the world. He is also a PhD and an acknowledged specialist on the life history of British fishes. His great passion is catching large roach but, on the occasion that led to the extraordinary sequence of events described here, he was after pike. They were not particularly huge pike where he was fishing, but he hoped he might have the chance of a 20-pounder if things went his way.
He was just putting his tackle into the car when one of his neighbours approached.

Terry quickly wound in Ron’s flattie rod, cut off the end tackle at the swivel and tied on the perk. After a swift look up the beach to make sure Ron wasn’t watching, he walked to the edge of the surf, worked up a gentle pendulum and then smoothly cast the perk straight out in front of him. It landed with a splash about 80 yards away.
Ron was soon sauntering back up the beach, hands in pockets and whistling softly. ‘Anything doing?’ he asked when he reached them.
‘Yeah, you had one good knock just now,’ Frank said.
‘Really? Which rod?’
‘That one. Don

‘But vere have my eels gone?’ Herr Schmidt bleated, utterly bereft at this turn of events. His wife didn’t look too impressed either.
Patrick stood up, removed his cap and scratched his head.
‘Be Jesus, Mister Schmidt, sir, them eels of yours, I can only think they must have eaten one another!’
THOMAS, TIGER FISH AND THE OLD BULL ELEPHANT
An African canoe trip involves an epic battle with rod and line and a reminder that in the bush, as elsewhere, humans must respect their place in nature.

‘You’re not alone, Kenny,’ John grunted. ‘The ruddy sea trout don’t seem that keen, either!’
SILHOUETTE IN THE RIVER
Sea trout fishing at night is incredibly exciting, but it can be weird as well. Nocturnal noises can be put down to local wildlife and visions in the darkness logically explained away in the cold light of day. Or can they?
avid was a highly experienced fisherman with a particular love for sea trout. He travelled far for his fishing, at home as much on the lochs and loughs of western Scotland and Ireland as he was on the rivers of south we

An incident happened in southern Australia that might shed some light on this thorny issue. As with many non-scientific experiments, the results were inconclusive, but certainly gave those involved an amazing experience that they believe to this day to be unique. However, before telling the story, it is important to know something of the history and landscape behind the action that day.
Brown trout fishing in Tasmania, the island off the southernmost shore of Australia, really took off when the government constructed several dams in the Western Highlands to p

Because he was looking round when the ice struck, Steve took much of the force of the impact on the right side of his body, especially in the ribs and a smash in the face. The ice knocked him off his feet and picked him up on its leading edge, so that he was carried down the river as though he were a stranded seal or polar bear. Try as he might, he couldn’t fight against the pressure forcing him downstream and anyway, even if he had been able to slide off the ice, its bulk would almost certainly have run him over and crushed him against the riverbed. ‘Jeeesuus!’ Chris whispered. ‘The smallest one must be 8 pounds!’ ‘What about that big bugger?’ breathed Andrew.
‘I was going to say 20. It’s bloody enormous, whatever weight it is.’
‘It won’t be easy, will it?’
‘We’ll have to choose the right time and then stalk it.’
Andrew looked around him at the landmarks. There weren’t many to go on, apart from the fencing that kept the cows out of the river. There was a stile that they should be able to find in the dark, and they could pace it out from there to where the fish were lying, so they would know roug

Colin had dropped the rod and was leaning on the boat, muscles screaming with exhaustion but with an unbelievable feeling of achievement in his head. Adrenalin was coursing round his veins faster than he had never experienced before, and he couldn’t speak for the moment. He was just staring down at the monstrous tarpon in front of him.
Peter held the end of the tape against the fish’s tail, while Steve measured up the lateral line to its snout.
‘Exactly 9 feet,’ he called out, then measured the girth and did a mental calculation. ‘I reckon she goes about 1

‘Visit the Motor Museum and the abbey,’ suggested Chris.

He suddenly saw his chance and, while Herr Schmidt looked ashore, firmly clutching the gunwales with both arms outstretched, Patrick reached his hand into the peat bag and out over the side went the first eel.
Herr Schmidt was blissfully unaware of these proceedings and was humming to himself, his gaze firmly fixed out ahead, no doubt thinking of the welcome he would receive from his loved one, who obviously shared his passion for eating eels. So Patrick took this heaven-sent opportunity and, quick as lightning, he flipped the second eel over the gunwale.

Then he had a thought. The ghillie had been unusually quiet over lunch and Michael remembered that the last time they had been up on the river, they had bought the line locally and the ghillie had put it on the reel for Caroline. In that case, it was probably diplomatic to change the subject quickly and talk about the improving condition of the river and how it might affect fishing that afternoon. Ghillies did not like to be seen to have human failings.
After lunch, Michael was again fishing on his own. His pool turned a slight dogleg to the left three-quarte

The helicopter wouldn’t come back for anything, so it was left to the camp medic to patch Steve up as well as he could, which mainly consisted of keeping him full of painkillers and vodka for the rest of the week. However, probably the best antidote to the agony in his ribs and face was the fact that Steve accounted for 160 salmon to his own rod in one of the most astonishing weeks in the Varzuga’s fishing history. Between them the party caught more than 800 fish, several of which weighed more than 30 pounds and a couple over 40.
Steve flew back to London wit

Steve was on Alphonse in the Indian Ocean. He decided to ask his boatman whether they could venture out beyond the reef into slightly deeper water. He had been down to the fish market early the previous morning and seen some of the boxes being landed. There were species there that never came onto the flats where he had been stalking bone fish, and he felt an urge to try to catch some of them. In particular, the giant trevally looked a perfect target. He had heard people talk about how hard they fought and he fancied having a crack at them. He might not get anoth

Despite the wholesale massacre going on around him, Mark had caught just enough golden mahseer on that first trip to acknowledge the river’s fantastic potential, its gorges fed by crystal-clear spring water from the ice and snow melt on the higher Himalayas. However, while waiting during the long periods between mahseer strikes, he regularly heard the dull boom of faraway dynamite explosions.
‘What can we do?’ his guide, Gaurav, had cried in exasperation. ‘How can we ever attract fishermen here while our countrymen act with such barbarism towards our precious

‘Another dark sea trout, but no salmon. I’ve seen plenty, but they just won’t take.’
‘The fish are getting twitchy with this rise in water; they’re head and tailing all over the place up here, so I reckon one’s got to take in a minute. Fish down behind me.’
No sooner had he said it than Hughie had a good draw on the line as the fly reached mid-channel. He lifted the rod and was into a fish, at which point, about 15 yards below, a very stale sea trout of 4 or 5 pounds leapt clear of the water.
‘Another kipper,’ said Simon and turned to walk to the head o

‘Sod it! Make it let go!’ he yelled.
A tug-of-war ensued, with Barry on the gaff and the boatman grimly pulling at his boot. This impasse continued until the conger’s vicelike mouth-hold tore the front off the boatman’s boot and Barry went flying sternwards, ending up prostrate on the deck with the eel in his lap. It didn’t bite him because its teeth were already set on mangling the ripped-off toe-end of the skipper’s rubber footwear.
Barry managed to push the eel away and scramble clear. At last, the skipper, toes poking through the hole in his boot, land

‘Jawohl! Vun excellent eel, nearly 2 whole kilos!’
‘Oh, be Jesus, hurrah,’ Patrick mumbled under his breath and busied himself with the tea.
After lunch, he left Herr Schmidt to it again. The man seemed in seventh heaven, sitting on his tackle box, with the knowledge that there would be at least one eel to take home to his wife. That put the strongest possible pressure on Patrick. He could perhaps pass off one stray eel if there was something fresh, silver and with an adipose fin in the bottom of the boat. He felt that his reputation depended on the next c

The fight was amazing. The tiger, stripes and all, came soaring out of the water, then ran all over the immediate Zambezi, leaping plenty and trying to dive under the boat when it came close enough. Just as quickly as the acrobatics had started, the fish gave up and was easy enough to draw to the net. As soon as it hit the bottom of the boat, the mepps fell out of its mouth.

‘That’s 3 kilos, about 61/2 pounds,’ said my guide, shaking my hand. ‘Nice fish. Good size for eating.’
We fished on until mid-afternoon and I had a coupl
