Yelverton Golf Club

Situated just ten miles north of Plymouth, on Roborough Down within the Dartmoor National Park; the course has extensive views across the moors and across the Tamar Valley to Cornwall. Considered by many to be one of the South West’s best courses, it is a delightful 18 hole course with great character, that is testing yet fair to all standards of golfer. The club was founded in 1904 and the present course was designed by Herbert Fowler. The course is built on the site of the old Yeoland Consuls mine workings, and is renowned for a variety of interesting ravines caused by the past mining activities; these natural features have been used to enhance the degree of difficulty of several of the holes. With fairways lined by gorse and heather, and with fast and true greens, the Par 71, SSS 71 course provides a challenge for all golfers.Henry Longhurst began his long love affair with golf here; in his book ‘My Life and Soft Times’, he recalls the time at Yelverton in 1920 when he was first introduced to the game – “…I was hooked for life. A set of three or four clubs was procured for me from the Pro at Yelverton, who also gave me a lesson, and thus it was on this charming heath-and heather course that I hit my first ‘proper’ shot at golf”.
