So the plot was hatched and Chris agreed to accompany Andrew on the quest. They went down to the lower river in the morning, when the tide was just flooding, and did a thorough recce. There were a number of small sea trout shoals lying against the far bank, some with large fish among them, although not the sort of size they had been told to expect. ”Fraid so, yeah. Pity, that’s a real Arthur’s Lake beauty. Look, George, haul in the anchor and let’s see if we can’t manoeuvre the boat round the trunk and free the bugger.’
George wound in his line and set down his rod, and was giving the fish, now only just under the surface, a final look before reaching for the anchor rope. Then the unbelievable happened. A number of beetles were drifting down the wind lane, past the boat and over the fish. Even though George could see the fly in the trout’s jaw, so that it was obviously still tethered to the tree trunk,
‘Thanks,’ I said, then nearly had the rod ripped out of my hands as something akin to an express train hit the mepps and was gone. ‘Bloody hell, what was that?’
‘Tiger. Don’t worry, you’ll probably only hook into one in ten takes.’
He was right. I wasn’t short of obliging tiger fish; I just couldn’t get them to stay on the hook. I tried hitting them immediately, giving them time, not striking at all, hard strikes, soft strikes … and then one did stick, although I’m not sure I did anything significantly different to make it happen.
