The couple were regular visitors to Scotland’s River Lochy, a beautiful spate river on the west coast with a reputation for big grilse runs and an occasional very large salmon. On this morning there was a good, slightly coloured flow following rain over the previous few days, but the river was fining down and clearing quickly, and the portents were for excellent conditions to emerge during the day. The rise in water was almost certain to have brought fresh fish into the river, and Michael’s confidence was high as he and Caroline set up their rods.

It was time to select a fly, and suddenly being on his own wasn’t quite so easy. His father had always chosen the pattern in the past, so this was a new experience. They had gone fishing in Wales the previous year, out on a boat on Lake Vyrnwy, and Victor tried to remember what flies they had used then. He finally settled on a Soldier Palmer, because it had worked well in Wales and it seemed logical that its bright red colour would show up well in the darkly stained water in Scotland.
Victor’s first casting efforts didn’t amount to much, but he kept going and

‘Heck, they don’t give you much of a chance, do they?’
Gendall grinned. ‘Not much, no.’
The afternoon ended without a fish and John feeling rather chastened by the experience. He had cast at four beautiful trout, all over 3 pounds, but not one had been tempted to give the fly even a cursory glance. And they had spooked all too easily.
‘Right,’ said Gendall over a beer in the lodge, ‘that’s the introduction bit over. Tomorrow we’ll go after some proper fish, but you’ve got to forget your chalkstream fishing from home; I’ve done that and it’s kid’s stuff
