Mark made all the right noises about wishing one of the party had caught the marlin, but the Japanese seemed genuinely delighted that someone had caught a fish. Meanwhile, Don had opened up the boat’s big diesels and they were powering back through the swell towards Cairns.
Mark tidied the tackle and joined him in the wheelhouse. ‘How big was the marlin?’
‘About 450, 475, something like that. Not a grander, but a bloody good fish, just the same. Not bad, considering you haven’t paid a cent for the trip!’
Once they reached calmer water, Don motioned for

‘Er… I could cut the head off and even fillet it, if you thought that would help?’
‘I don’t think it would. I’ve already seen those eyes and that mouth, and I’d be thinking of them when I was eating. I’m really grateful to you for trying, but I think I’ll leave it this time.’
Mark went home feeling rather miffed. He didn’t really like killing pike and had only done so as a favour to the neighbour. He and his family certainly wouldn’t eat it, so the fish had died unnecessarily. Mark’s conservation background riled at that. It was okay to kill to eat, but

‘He’s snagged me round a rock!’
‘No, no! He’s snagged you between rocks,’ cried Gaurav, laughing now and obviously enjoying himself immensely. ‘Now you will see how we really fight the goonch.’
With that, Gaurav picked up a sizeable rock and ran downs
