AMAZING FISHING STORIES
I didn’t see the float go under, because I wasn’t looking. I just have this vivid recollection of a truly violent pull on the rod, the like of which I had never felt before and seldom since. ohn Slader grew up with fishing in his blood. His father, Bill, was an avid sea trout and salmon angler when in his prime, while his grandfather, William Bale, was considered by many of his peers to be the finest trout angler on the River Lyn in Devon, south west England, in the latter part of the nineteenth century. In those days, 100 trout in a day was not uncommon, and C F Wade, in his book Exmoor Streams published in 1903, referred to one of the pools, Vellacott’s, having scores of salmon, almost as thick as herrings.
