Victor sniffed and stared at him. It made sense, especially as he had seen a glimpse of a huge bird himself. ‘But you’ll never believe how big it was, never!’

Peter was just about to say something about releasing the fish when one of the crewmen leant over the side and clubbed the sailfish to death with a weighted wooden cosh. He and a colleague sank gaffs into its flanks and hauled it aboard. Catch and release didn’t seem to be first priority with the crew, so Peter bit his tongue on the subject, despite James’s obvious disappointment that his quarry had had to die.
‘Nice fish,’ shouted the skipper from the wheelhouse. ‘About 60, 70 pounds.’
