f you read the Introduction to this book, you will know that as an 8 year old I encountered a fish I never saw, but the savagery of the take was such that it haunts me still, five decades later. So even before I spoke to the man in the tackle shop with the hole in the floor, I knew monsters lurked around Brighton’s Palace Pier, in among the pilings of the old, rusty landing stage.
