David told him what had happened and the keeper listened increasingly intently.
‘You’re sure it was a human figure?’

‘Positively brown,’ agreed Peter.

Barbara flew to Anchorage, the hub of Alaskan salmon fishing safaris, and from there she took a sea plane further up the coast. On her first morning she found herself in a large bay sitting in a good-sized, comfortable boat, two rods fishing heavy outriggers down deep and using flashing lures to attract the fish in close, and then herring as bait for the main hooks.
Her rod suddenly buckled over and she reached out to grab it, but she was beaten to it by one of the boatmen, who struck into the fish, made sure it was safely hooked and then handed her the rod.
