‘It is nearly time. There, look!’
The fire was burnt down by now to glowing cinders, a few charred timbers and goodness knows what else left in the middle of it all. Some of the menfolk now came forward and proceeded to push the smoking remnants from the shallow margin into the swirling currents of the main river. As the smouldering debris hit the water, the most amazing thing happened. The water began to boil as fish of all sizes rolled on the surface, slashing at what was coming down into the water from the funeral pyre.

‘Let go!’ Steve shouted, and the boatman obeyed, allowing the fish to spring clear.
However, rather than dive away to safety, it proceeded to swim slowly round the boat, eyeing up the two men while it continued to shake its head and rid itself of the final pieces of plastic. Then, with a great slash of its tail, it dived away out of sight and was gone.
The boatman was grinning inanely, out of sheer relief rather than with humour, Steve suspected. The man reached out his hand.
‘Very good, sir. Bloody glad it wasn’t great white, though.’
