Short Extract

Peter waited a fraction longer, then fired at 10 yards’ range. The cracker shell hit the bear slap on the nose, bounced off as intended, fell into the grass and exploded like a Thunderflash. The bear skidded to a halt, spun round a hundred and eighty degrees and galloped out of the camp as fast as his legs would carry him.

Hell, said Steve. That bear must have been doin’ thirty miles an hour on the way in. Peter laughed nervously, loading another cracker shell into the breach. Yeah, but I reckon he was doing forty on the way

Nigel, motoring up through the rapids above Steve, had seen the iceberg break off from the bank and begin floating down towards his friend’s pool. On a hunch, he had ordered his guide to turn the boat round so that they could shoot back and warn Steve. They arrived too late and were confronted by the sight of Steve spread-eagled across the front of the ice flow, being driven unerringly down towards the ocean.
What happened next was a mixture of blind courage and superb boat-handling skills. The guide brought the boat alongside the ice block, picked his moment

‘We’ve arranged your birthday bash,’ they told him. ‘Everything’s organised.’
‘Thanks, guys, which pub are we going to?’
‘Er… a bar in Florida, probably.’
‘That’s right,’ said Peter. ‘We’re going to the Keys, you, me and him.
You’re joining our annual fishing party.’
‘Richard’s organised the shop rota, and Hannah’s made sure your passport’s ready and you’ve got the right clothes to take. We’ve thought of everything.’
