Short Extract
The tension was broken slightly when the elephant, still scratching its rump, deftly picked up an acacia pod from the ground and lifted it into his mouth. Five more pods and much more backside rubbing followed, but then the elephant seemed satisfied. He stopped scratching, stared down at Thomas and Tom a moment longer, slowly turned around and lumbered away among the trees, eerily silent despite his enormous bulk and the size of his feet.
‘That was lucky,’ Tom whispered reverently, as though the elephant was still there. ‘He could have trampled us to death an
in, letting the boat come beam on to the weather and accepting the inevitable. At least it would be over quickly.
Suddenly, the boat hit the bottom with an almighty thump, then seemed to bounce onto the next wave and crash down onto solid ground. It swivelled round in a complete circle and tipped over violently as the next wave hit it, throwing Charles out in the process and hitting him a glancing blow on the head as it landed, upside down, beside him. He lay on the ground, too far gone even to feel relief that he was finally off the water.
Some time later
Peter finally managed to string enough words together to give everyone an idea what had taken place out on Bharp. His friends mostly greeted the tale with alcohol-fuelled ribaldry, but not so the locals. One of the ghillies thrust a large glass of whisky into his hand.
‘Drink that, Peter, I reckon you need it. You see, you don’t stay out on Bharp after dark. Everyone round here knows that.’
The ghillie shrugged. ‘It’s just something you don’t do.’
