The sea lion seemed to have finished the tail because it was now swimming at some speed after the rest of the fish. Barbara realised with horror that she was actually fishing for a sea lion with about 25 pounds of front-end king salmon as bait.
‘Quickly!’ the boatman shouted. ‘He’s catching up!’
The sea lion’s attention must have been completely on the salmon and its natural defence systems were therefore down at that precise moment. It either had no idea that there were other predators around, or it had forgotten about them in its feeding frenzy.

In the mid-1970s, a Mr Chevalier hooked a big fish in April in the upper river, but lost it after half an hour. In early June, estate owner Richard Tyser saw a group of black-backed gulls feeding on the riverbank, and found the remains of a huge fish that had died of the devastating disease of that time, ulcerative dermal necrosis or UDN. These remains weighed 38 pounds, so what the whole fish would have been we can only surmise.
The most recent encounter with a really big salmon was in October 2001. Captain Tim Ritson and party were fishing the lower river,

The keeper was quiet for a moment or two, then looked at David with an embarrassed expression. ‘This has happened a few times before and always under the same conditions. You probably haven’t seen the river this morning, but it’s come up a hell of a lot since you were out there fishing; it’s been raining up on the moor, just like it did when
Herbert Tattershall drowned.’
‘Okay, so why was he haunting my fishing last night?’
‘Well, if my theory’s right, he was trying to scare you off the river, just like he was with the others when he appeared before. I

There were paddles in the boat. Richard took one and handed it to Greg. ‘Go on, it’s your fish.’
Greg held the blade end, took careful aim and brought the handle of the paddle crashing down on the pike’s head.
‘Again, just to make sure.’
He hit it again twice, whereupon a great shudder went through the pike’s body and it lay still. They knelt there for ages, gazing down and admiring the fish in disbelief that this was happening to them. Eventually, they collected the rest of their tackle into the kn

och Bharp, on the island of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, off Scotland’s west coast, is a supernatural place on the brightest of summer days, let alone as night draws in. The whole area is surrounded with relics of ancient history, such as the standing stones erected thousands of years ago, a local Stonehenge. But it is the Norse influence, beginning back in the dark ages, that lies behind this particular story. The Vikings sailed here from their Scandinavian homeland, made landfall and settled on the island. It must have been an attractive proposition more

‘What the hell happened?’ cried Andrew.
Chris’s face was white as a ghost and the expression on his face told its own story: he had just received the biggest fright of his life. His mouth opened, but nothing came out. He just pointed despairingly behind him.
Andrew shone the torch over the fence and two cows stared back at him, their eyes shining bright in the torch beam.
