‘I’ve got a better idea,’ said John.
John took out his hip flask and poured a few drops of whisky into the water. ‘I name this place the CBA Pot.’ Robin’s frown deepened. ‘CBA?’ ‘Can’t Be Arsed,’ said John.
The name has stuck. And when the water is low on the Coquet, the threesome wouldn’t dream of fishing without a few casts in the CBA Pot; even though, to their knowledge, it hasn’t produced another fish from that day to this!

Barry managed to push the eel away and scramble clear. At last, the skipper, toes poking through the hole in his boot, landed a blow on the conger’s head with the baseball bat, momentarily stunning the fish. Making good use of his temporary advantage, he grabbed a longhandled bait-cutting blade and cut through the monofilament just above the trace. He then attempted to kick the eel with his one good boot towards the open hatch into the fish hold.
Unfortunately, the kick only succeeded in waking up the conger, which, now completely free from the line, started

Having read another article on pike fishing, Richard went into town on the Friday and took his pocket money into the tackle shop while his mother was buying groceries next door. He came out with a wire trace and two treble hooks, and a recommendation from the tackle dealer to buy some sprats from the fishmonger for bait.
Saturday morning saw the boys on the lakeside again. Greg had borrowed his father’s sea-fishing rod and big wooden ‘Scarborough’ reel, loaded with suitably strong line. They tackled up, tied on the wire trace and mounted one of the sprats as

The sea lion seemed to have finished the tail because it was now swimming at some speed after the rest of the fish. Barbara realised with horror that she was actually fishing for a sea lion with about 25 pounds of front-end king salmon as bait.
‘Quickly!’ the boatman shouted. ‘He’s catching up!’
The sea lion’s attention must have been completely on the salmon and its natural defence systems were therefore down at that precise moment. It either had no idea that there were other predators around, or it had forgotten about them in its feeding frenzy.
The w

In the mid-1970s, a Mr Chevalier hooked a big fish in April in the upper river, but lost it after half an hour. In early June, estate owner Richard Tyser saw a group of black-backed gulls feeding on the riverbank, and found the remains of a huge fish that had died of the devastating disease of that time, ulcerative dermal necrosis or UDN. These remains weighed 38 pounds, so what the whole fish would have been we can only surmise.
The most recent encounter with a really big salmon was in October 2001. Captain Tim Ritson and party were fishing the lower river,

The keeper was quiet for a moment or two, then looked at David with an embarrassed expression. ‘This has happened a few times before and always under the same conditions. You probably haven’t seen the river this morning, but it’s come up a hell of a lot since you were out there fishing; it’s been raining up on the moor, just like it did when
Herbert Tattershall drowned.’
‘Okay, so why was he haunting my fishing last night?’
‘Well, if my theory’s right, he was trying to scare you off the river, just like he was with the others when he appeared before. I

‘Just stay put. I want this fish, okay?’
That was the cue for the marlin to break through the surface, its long bill pointed skywards as it cut through a trough between the swells and disappeared into the next wall of water before boring away into the depths. The adrenalin was pumping through Mark’s body now, with the exhilaration of seeing the fish so early in the fight. The power surging up the line was unbelievable.

Mike was an excellent fisherman under UK conditions, having caught countless trout and at least his fair share of salmon. In preparation for the Cuba trip, he had also done some saltwater training on bass, garfish and mackerel, so he was used to wading in the sea and casting at visual marine targets, even if the temperature had been slightly more conducive to neoprene chest waders than shorts and sand shoes.
The fishing began on bonefish, with his Cuban guide poling the dory along the golden flats until he found a shoal of fish. Mike then took to the water an

I was quite close by this time and it soon became obvious that he was playing a fish. It was a spirited fight from the salmon, charging off on a couple of decent runs and taking some time to subdue before he managed to bring it to the net. I’m delighted to say that, even though we knew his party had killed several salmon up to that point, this one was released back to the river. If ever a fish deserved it, that one did. Apparently it had been hooked the previous evening, and had run down the pool with such power that the whole fly line had been ripped off the re

Gaurav’s second boulder dislodged the goonch and Mark immediately put his back into the job, frantically pumping the rod to pull the fish away from the rocks. The fight after that was a battle of attrition, the goonch trying to get back to the snags and Mark determined to stop it. Gradually he started to gain the upper hand and after another 10 minutes of blood and thunder, he was able to bring the goonch into the shallows. Gaurav pounced on the fish and held it by the tail.
By the time Mark waded into the water, the goonch had been subdued and he was able to

Before leaving, he spent months poring over magazine articles written b
