Kenny shook his head and chuckled. ‘You couldn’t be more wrong.’
‘Olaf stayed with her for a few honeymoon months,’ David continued, ‘but then his men got twitchy and persuaded him to go off on a pillaging raid down the coast. While he was gone, his new princess started getting doubts about whether Olaf really loved her; you know, she was worried he was happier fighting with his men than being married to her. So she hatched a plan for when he came home, to see whether he really did love her or not. As soon as his boat came into the loch from the River Ewe, sh

Nigel, motoring up through the rapids above Steve, had seen the iceberg break off from the bank and begin floating down towards his friend’s pool. On a hunch, he had ordered his guide to turn the boat round so that they could shoot back and warn Steve. They arrived too late and were confronted by the sight of Steve spread-eagled across the front of the ice flow, being driven unerringly down towards the ocean.
What happened next was a mixture of blind courage and superb boat-handling skills. The guide brought the boat alongside the ice block, picked his moment

They searched for another 30 minutes, by which time even Bill was on the verge of calling it a day until Michael suggested they tried one last pass over the original lie where the fish had taken.
‘There, it’s down there!’ shouted Michael. They repeated the retrieval and retying process from earlier and the fish was, incredibly, still attached.
At this point, the fish turned back downstream and then, for the first time, it came out of the water, showing them its true size at last. Its tail slapped back with an almighty splash and there was silence for a sec

‘We always keep some wood and kindling and matches here, just in case anyone gets caught out on the lough or wants a dry place to have lunch. You must have started the fire yourself. The rest was in your imagination, Mr Cuthbertson, believe me!’
Charles slowly nodded his head. That must have been it: he had managed to find his way here and light a fire, but everything else had been a dream.
O’Reilly put an arm round his shoulder and guided him out through the door. ‘Let’s get you back to the hotel, where you can have a bath and a decent breakfast. You’ll f

The session went well from the start. Mark had long given up using live baits for pike and instead offered them a herring with an incision down the belly to let the smell of the guts radiate around to attract predators. From the first cast, small jack pike hit the bait, but it was an hour or so into fishing that he had his first take from a reasonable fish. He followed the time-honoured method of hooking a pike: let it run with the bait until it stops, then give it a few seconds to turn the fish round in its mouth in preparation for swallowing it head first and

Victor managed to tell the story between sobs and sighs, but his tale was half-hearted. ‘I know you don’t believe me, I just know you don’t, but it’s true, all true, I promise…!’
‘Victor, of course we believe you,’ said his father, ‘especially as I think
I know what’s happened.’ ‘What?’
‘I saw a very large bird making off over the loch holding something in its talons. I think an eagle may have come down and stolen your fish.’
Victor sniffed and stared at him. It made sense, especially as he had seen a glimpse of a huge bird himself. ‘But you’ll nev

‘Certainly is, sir.’
Jackson continued to catch fish all morning. He seemed instinctively to know where the best lies were, and as often as not a fish would be hooked. The other remarkable thing was how few fish he lost. As unlikely as it seemed, the short-line policy seemed to work. They were hooked, played, netted and killed in as quick a time as Murdo had ever witnessed. Major Jackson was more like a fish merchant than an angler; he seemed interested only in the money he would make down in London, rather than any pleasure he was gaining from his sport.

IRISH EEL ESCAPOLOGY
When a salmon fisherman decided to go after more modest sport, his ghillie took drastic action to salvage his own reputation.
ough Currane, in the south west of Ireland, is one of the best and most famous stillwater fisheries for salmon and sea trout, and fishermen have flocked there for decades from all over the world. Germans are some of its greatest supporters, often travelling there in the same groups year after year and employing their regular ghillies to guide them.
To get the most out of Currane you have to go afloat, either

‘Just shows, you doesn’t it?’ crowed Robin. ‘A bit of effort, and a willingness to experiment, and then…’
‘Yes, alright, don’t rub it in,’ said Mike in a resigned tone. ‘You realise we’ve a job to do now, don’t you?’
Robin frowned. ‘What?’
‘This isn’t a recognised pool. We need to name it.’ ‘How about Robin’s Pot?’ Robin suggested modestly.
‘I’ve got a better idea,’ said John.
John took out his hip flask and poured a few drops of whisky into the water. ‘I name this place the CBA Pot.’ Robin’s frown deepened. ‘CBA?’ ‘Can’t Be Arsed,’ said John.

The fish then settled in the rough water at the head of the New pool below and became as immovable as before. However, a while later they saw the fish rubbing its mouth on the gravel bottom, and this eventually broke the nylon.
The following February, a local ghillie, Donald Cameron, found a decomposing female salmon kelt at the tail of the Bengie pool, half a mile or so downstream of the New pool. He and head bailiff, John Bray, showed it to Richard Tyser, then chairman of the Brora Salmon Fishery Board, and they measured it at 54 inches long, the same as Mi

Steve’s idea of a Ferrari was very apt. The fish towed them much faster than the river’s flow, so that they literally tore through the first rapid like a speedboat, through a short pool, then into a second, boulder-strewn shallow reach where the inevitable happened: the line became entangled round several rocks as the fish picked a route between them. Steve was desperate that the line shouldn’t chaff on the boulders, but Saban and Bola controlled the coracle brilliantly with their flimsy paddles and managed to extricate the line around or over all the obstacles.

Thethirddaywasagreatsuccess, however, withPeterlandinganother five steelhead. As all the fish were returned alive, size was calculated using the standard formula for salmon and trout: nose-to-tail length multiplied by girth squared and divided by 700. As a result, Peter’s largest fish that day went 31 inches and 10 pounds in weight, while Nigel landed a 33-inch fish that would have been at least 12 pounds.
The climatic variability of Alaskan Tundra in autumn was given its full range during the following 24 hours. There was 14 degrees Fahrenheit of frost that ni

The second day they targeted permit, which his more experienced friends said were difficult, although John had caught three before and briefed Mike on how to induce a take. Again, with Carlos’s expert knowledge of the flats, they found a small pod of fish in slightly deeper water than they had fished yesterday. Mike’s third cast at the lead permit fell just right, and he allowed the crab to sink to the bottom before executing John’s suggested twitch to bring some life to the lure. The permit, now feeding upended, reacted immediately and smothered the crab, where

The fight lasted a good 15 minutes. Once he had stopped that first run, Robert brought the fish back into the deeper water and managed to keep it there, letting it run round in the open but always feeling that he had some control over it. Once he felt the fish weakening, he started backing up towards the shallower water close to the bank, coaxing the fish in with him. He unhooked the net from his back, put his foot on the head and extended the handle in preparation for landing the sea trout.

Skerries are small outcrops of rock that poke above the surface of the loch, often as tiny stony beaches in the middle of otherwise seemingly deep water. Despite being 3000 acres in area, Harray is seldom more than 6 feet deep and these shallow areas were always the best for fishing back then. This one seemed peculiar, though. Geordie was right: it was too high out of the water.
We were about 100 yards away when the stones started to move, then slid off the back of the skerry.
‘I do not believe it,’ shouted Peter. ‘It’s a seal!’
‘No,’ said Geordie, ‘you
