He suddenly saw his chance and, while Herr Schmidt looked ashore, firmly clutching the gunwales with both arms outstretched, Patrick reached his hand into the peat bag and out over the side went the first eel.
Herr Schmidt was blissfully unaware of these proceedings and was humming to himself, his gaze firmly fixed out ahead, no doubt thinking of the welcome he would receive from his loved one, who obviously shared his passion for eating eels. So Patrick took this heaven-sent opportunity and, quick as lightning, he flipped the second eel over the gunwale.

‘I’m sure it’s your fish,’ he said. ‘There’s a definite indentation on top of its skull with a smaller one just behind it, and that scar on its flank kind of looked familiar from the television. It certainly looks to me as though some idiot tried to kill it when it was younger!’
PART SIX Research and Reminiscences
THINGS AIN’T WHAT THEY USED TO BE
Runs of salmon and sea trout are nowhere near as strong on English rivers today as they were in years gone by. One man has some remarkable stories to support this observation.

‘Now, Murdo, whatever else you do for me this week, make sure that you put my fish on the 5 o’clock train each evening. D’you understand?’ ‘Whatever you say, Major Jackson.’
‘Your job is to box them up, ice them down for the journey and then get them on that ruddy train. Clear?’
‘Clear as day, Major Jackson. Can I suggest the Munro killer this morning?’
‘I always fish a blue charm! There’s my box; I’ve every size we’ll need, on singles and trebles, so make sure you look after them. Now, where do I start on this pool?’
‘Just follow me, Major Jackson.’

Will I ever Learn to Swim?

If you are reading this now I am assuming you are considering taking adult swimming lessons, and like most other adults reading this page you will have concerns. Let me just list a few of the comments we get from would-be adult swimmers over and over and over again.

  • I’m the odd one out. Everyone else can swim.
  • My legs sink. Swimming lessons just don’t work for me.
  • I just can’t put my face in the water.
  • If I take swimming lessons, will I have to go in the deep end? Panic!!!
  • I’m not just an adult – I’m way too old.
  • Adult swimming lessons for men are embarrassing.

The list is endless but largely there are many many reasons why people manage to talk themselves out of taking adult swimming lessons. As of today, we haven’t met one single person that can’t learn to swim as an adult no matter what their age or perceived problems.

Children that are Frightened> Being afraid isn’t a reason to let your child avoid swimming lessons. It’s normal to be afraid of the water, for some more than others. You don’t want to force your child to take swimming lessons but letting them duck out won’t work either.

How Long Before my Child Learns to Swim?

When teaching children to swim it is important to remember that they should learn at their own pace. They will not develop confidence if they do not trust their teacher, and they will not enjoy the water if they are forced in before they are ready. Some students learn at a quicker pace than others, but in the end they all usually learn to swim as well as each other.

Baby swimming classes usually start at around 6 months although many recommend not till 12 months. Babies can be taken swimming immediately after giving birth! The NHS advises that babies can be taken swimming at any age but under 6 months, a large public pool is too cold for a baby.

Do Babies Know How to Swim?

Newborn babies instinctively know not to breathe while their heads are submerged in water,” says Certified Nurse-Midwife Charlene Taylor, who has assisted in more than 50 water births near her Boston, Mass. home. “From what I’ve seen, it seems as if they know how to swim instinctively. Many of them open their eyes and move their limbs and propel themselves forward in the tubs.

‘That’s one hell of a fish, too,’ said Steve. ‘Biggest tarpon I’ve ever seen, on this or any other boat out of the Keys.’
Colin had dropped the rod and was leaning on the boat, muscles screaming with exhaustion but with an unbelievable feeling of achievement in his head. Adrenalin was coursing round his veins faster than he had never experienced before, and he couldn’t speak for the moment. He was just staring down at the monstrous tarpon in front of him.
Peter held the end of the tape against the fish’s tail, while Steve measured up the lateral line to it

The idea of catching tuna from small boats not only caught other fishermen’s imagination, it became the accepted way of tackling blue fins, especially during the heyday of the North East English coast fishery, which was based at Scarborough. Back in Nova Scotia, many big specimens were landed on Cape Breton Island and the record was regularly bettered, although the runs of tuna were beginning to dwindle by 1950. One of the most avid fishermen at this time was Jack Ross’s son-in-law, Duncan Hodgson.
Duncan, a Commander in the Canadian Navy, was a hunter with a

‘Absolutely no way! We just don’t go on that island. Look, we might as well call it a day now and get you back to the hotel for dinner. We can have an early start in the morning to make up for it.’
John raised his eyebrows at Veronica. ‘Oh alright, David, if you say so.’ The fishing didn’t look as though it would pick up before dusk anyway, so they weren’t missing much. However, he was fascinated to know more about this obsession David seemed to have with Isle Maree.
Back at the hotel, they sat David down in the Ghillies’ Bar with a glass of beer and were
