George shook his head. ‘I was watching it just beforehand. That fish was quietly sitting there, tethered for sure, but it wasn’t worried, otherwise it would have been fighting against the tension in the line. I’m convinced it came up and took those bugs as food.’
Brett laughed out loud. ‘We’ll never know for sure, but I’m inclined to agree with you, George. One thing’s for certain, though: that’s the biggest brown trout you’ll see this week, probably the luckiest as well.’
Helen chuckled. ‘And definitely the greediest!’

Still holding the rod, he picked up the bottle. He leant over the side as far as he dare and tapped the shark on the nose, whereupon it opened its mouth into a snarling gape. Steve immediately rammed the bottle into the shark’s mouth, picked up the tweezers and went to work on the treble.
It was actually the shark’s furious head shaking that enabled the tweezers to pull the hook free, and there then followed a wild few seconds of mad thrashing around from the front end of the fish while the boatman, to give him his due, held onto the rope manfully at the tail
‘That was swimming around the bay this morning,’ said Peter. ‘You couldn’t ask for a fresher salmon off the tide than that.’
No sooner had Helen’s grilse hit the deck boards than George had another fish swirl at the muddler, then the rod tip was pulled down sharply as the salmon turned and hit the silver stoat on the point. Even as he played the fish, three or four grilse head and tailed in the vicinity of the boat, and George had the distinct impression that they were floating in salmon soup.
