‘Who’sfor fishing?’Johnasked.By thelookoftheother two,sprawled over armchairs, enthusiasm wasn’t great.
‘No thanks,’ said Mike, looking smug. ‘If you remember, I’ve already caught a fish today.’
John ignored him and looked at Robin.
‘I’ll go if you go,’ said Robin.
‘Right, let’s get changed then.’ A yellow hat was a yellow hat, and he wouldn’t win it back by wasting away the precious night hours drinking himself into a stupor.
John arrived downstairs in his fishing kit, but Robin hadn’t moved. His enthusiasm seemed to have evaporated along with th

He left his mother and ran to the rock, thinking the trout must have fallen off. But it hadn’t, it had completely disappeared. He stared in disbelief: this could not be happening to him. He was desperate for his father to see that fish, because he would never believe that Victor had caught something so big. He would just think he was lying and trying to boast, and it would be ages before he was allowed out fishing on his own again. This was an absolute disaster!
Victor started to cry. His mother tried to comfort him but he was inconsolable, and he was still s

‘Jeeees!’ shouted Brett. ‘Quick, cover him again. That was some fish. There, Helen, he’s just to your left.’
Helen cast again just in front of the trout and twitched the Para Dun slightly. Another swirl and this time the fish was firmly hooked, and set off on a powerful run in the opposite direction, away from the boat.
‘That’s your best today,’ cried Brett. ‘Don’t lose the bugger!’
Helen managed to stop the first run and bring the trout back towards her, but as soon as it came near the boat, it turned back on itself and went away again just as powerful

‘Bullshit!’ countered Mike. ‘You just forgot to bring your prawn tackle with you.’
John grunted but kept a dignified silence.
‘My sentiments exactly,’ agreed Robin, the third member of the party. ‘If a prawn saves a blank week, bring on the prawn, as far as I’m concerned.’
‘Heathens!’ muttered John. ‘Where are we going for supper?’
After their meal at the Railway Inn, over which they debated the rights and wrongs of fishing with anything other than fly for salmon or sewen, as the Welsh refer to sea trout in their mother tongue, they returned to the i

water, a fact recorded on Paul’s camera; and many others among the 30-odd boats drifting in for a closer look at the tarpon.
Paul checked his watch again. ‘Two hours, 52 minutes. That’s one hell of a marathon fight, Colin.’
‘That’s one hell of a fish, too,’ said Steve. ‘Biggest tarpon I’ve ever seen, on this or any other boat out of the Keys.’
Colin had dropped the rod and was leaning on the boat, muscles screaming with exhaustion but with an unbelievable feeling of achievement in his head. Adrenalin was coursing round his veins faster than he had never

‘Always the same off this island,’ muttered David. ‘I’ve got no confidence in the place.’
‘As the fishing’s died off, shall we land on the island and have a look round?’ suggested Veronica.
‘Sorry, I don’t go there,’ David declared.
‘Why ever not?’ she asked. ‘It would be terrific to land and have a look round while we’re here. Apparently it’s lovely.’
‘Absolutely no way! We just don’t go on that island. Look, we might as well call it a day now and get you back to the hotel for dinner. We can have an early start in the morning to make up for it.’

‘You’re not alone, Kenny,’ John grunted. ‘The ruddy sea trout don’t seem that keen, either!’
SILHOUETTE IN THE RIVER
Sea trout fishing at night is incredibly exciting, but it can be weird as well. Nocturnal noises can be put down to local wildlife and visions in the darkness logically explained away in the cold light of day. Or can they?
avid was a highly experienced fisherman with a particular love for sea trout. He travelled far for his fishing, at home as much on the lochs and loughs of western Scotland and Ireland as he was on the rivers of south we

An incident happened in southern Australia that might shed some light on this thorny issue. As with many non-scientific experiments, the results were inconclusive, but certainly gave those involved an amazing experience that they believe to this day to be unique. However, before telling the story, it is important to know something of the history and landscape behind the action that day.
Brown trout fishing in Tasmania, the island off the southernmost shore of Australia, really took off when the government constructed several dams in the Western Highlands to p

Because he was looking round when the ice struck, Steve took much of the force of the impact on the right side of his body, especially in the ribs and a smash in the face. The ice knocked him off his feet and picked him up on its leading edge, so that he was carried down the river as though he were a stranded seal or polar bear. Try as he might, he couldn’t fight against the pressure forcing him downstream and anyway, even if he had been able to slide off the ice, its bulk would almost certainly have run him over and crushed him against the riverbed. n 1998 Peter Spillett, his partner Yvette and children Rebecca and James, had enjoyed a two-week Kenyan safari and were based near
Malindi on the east African coast for a few days’ relaxation before going home to the UK. He had always been a bit ambivalent about big-game fishing: concern about the destruction of apex predators such as billfish pitted against the thrill of seeing and catching such large, exciting species. The family had already noticed the bleaching of coral caused by pollution and warming sea temperatures, while snorkelling over the reef of t

He trudged back to the cottage, which was in total darkness. He poured himself the remainder of the whisky, which wasn’t a great deal, he noted, sat down on the sofa and tried to decide how he was going to explain all this to Mike and Robin in the morning. And as he mused, his eyes were fixed firmly on the yellow hat sitting irritatingly on the sideboard.
Ah, well, there was always tomorrow night, and at least he wouldn’t have a stinking hangover when he woke up…
Rumours of huge fish beneath a pier were believed by some and discounted by most – but few c

Chris’s face was white as a ghost and the expression on his face told its own story: he had just received the biggest fright of his life. His mouth opened, but nothing came out. He just pointed despairingly behind him.
Andrew shone the torch over the fence and two cows stared back at him, their eyes shining bright in the torch beam. What had happened was that Chris had decided to have a quick nap before taking on the leviathan fish, forgetting that there were cows in the field and that cows are highly inquisitive animals. He had been woken by one of them lite
