Added to that, a planeload of anglers can take three hours to clear passport control, so pedantic are the immigration officers, who take an average of at least 10 minutes to process each visitor. Then, before individual groups board the small fleet of ex-army helicopters to ferry them to their respective rivers, everyone’s passports are rechecked by border guards looking like clones from a James Bond movie. The only redeeming feature of Saturday mornings at Murmansk airport is the knowledge of what lies ahead in rivers teeming with salmon.
Steve Edge arrived

It was after midnight when Barry arrived at his house. His immediate problem was that, after six hours in a fish hold and a similar time in the boot of the car while supper was eaten, a couple of pints drunk and he had driven home, it was probably advisable to take some conservation measures, otherwise the fish might not be edible by morning. He took a large box of sea salt from the kitchen, grabbed the plastic-covered eel in both arms and staggered up the stairs as quietly as he could, mindful that the rest of the household was fast asleep. He eased the eel int

The fish bore remorselessly downstream and all he could do was follow; the maximum side strain he dared use wasn’t making the slightest impression on its progress. They went through the rapids and into the next pool, where the fish at least slowed a little in the deeper water, giving Hughie and Simon a chance to catch up. They were still wading, because there was too much vegetation on the bank to play it safely from up there.
‘Er, Hughie, I reckon that water’s up by a foot since I was here half an hour ago. This is getting crazy.’
‘Look, get back to dry l

Will I ever Learn to Swim?

If you are reading this now I am assuming you are considering taking adult swimming lessons, and like most other adults reading this page you will have concerns. Let me just list a few of the comments we get from would-be adult swimmers over and over and over again.

  • I’m the odd one out. Everyone else can swim.
  • My legs sink. Swimming lessons just don’t work for me.
  • I just can’t put my face in the water.
  • If I take swimming lessons, will I have to go in the deep end? Panic!!!
  • I’m not just an adult – I’m way too old.
  • Adult swimming lessons for men are embarrassing.

The list is endless but largely there are many many reasons why people manage to talk themselves out of taking adult swimming lessons. As of today, we haven’t met one single person that can’t learn to swim as an adult no matter what their age or perceived problems.

Children that are Frightened> Being afraid isn’t a reason to let your child avoid swimming lessons. It’s normal to be afraid of the water, for some more than others. You don’t want to force your child to take swimming lessons but letting them duck out won’t work either.

How Long Before my Child Learns to Swim?

When teaching children to swim it is important to remember that they should learn at their own pace. They will not develop confidence if they do not trust their teacher, and they will not enjoy the water if they are forced in before they are ready. Some students learn at a quicker pace than others, but in the end they all usually learn to swim as well as each other.

Baby swimming classes usually start at around 6 months although many recommend not till 12 months. Babies can be taken swimming immediately after giving birth! The NHS advises that babies can be taken swimming at any age but under 6 months, a large public pool is too cold for a baby.

Do Babies Know How to Swim?

Newborn babies instinctively know not to breathe while their heads are submerged in water,” says Certified Nurse-Midwife Charlene Taylor, who has assisted in more than 50 water births near her Boston, Mass. home. “From what I’ve seen, it seems as if they know how to swim instinctively. Many of them open their eyes and move their limbs and propel themselves forward in the tubs.

George grunted, sorted out his line and cast again, this time just long enough for him to work the muddler through the surface. His concentration was fixed firmly on the wake of the fly across the water, when a mouth suddenly appeared and slashed violently at it. There was a tug, but then nothing.
‘Damn, that was a fish!’ he cried out in stunned surprise.
Peter laughed. ‘I told you…’
‘I’ve got one!’ shouted Helen from the bow, and George glanced over to see his wife’s single-handed rod bouncing around as she played an energetic salmon adroitly in the

Frank and Terry hadn’t hatched any special plan to pay Ron back; it was just that, as he had walked some distance away to answer a call of nature at that particular moment, they were presented with an unusual opportunity to do something. Booby trapping his fishing box or sabotaging his sandwiches were possibilities, but they weren’t particularly original and Ron definitely deserved more than that.
‘Quick, think of something,’ said Frank. ‘He’ll be back in a minute.’ ‘I can’t. You think of something.’
‘I’m no good at practical jokes. I don’t have Ron’s warp

‘He was playin’ a big halibut; close on 100 pounds, he reckoned. He had it right up near the boat, getting ready to pull it aboard. Just then, from underneath the boat, I tell you, a damned great polar bear came up and savaged the halibut! Biggest flatfish he’d ever caught in all his life, and he goes and loses it to a polar bear. Can you believe that?’
After Barbara’s experience over the past few minutes, she rather felt she could.
