Jose nosed the flat-bottomed dory in close to a stand of mangrove trees, and they immediately spied the unmistakeable shape of a tarpon just beneath the surface and under a tangle of branches.
Robin frowned. ‘I thought you said babies, Jose?’
‘It is a baby, man, it’s only about 30 pounds!’
Robin nodded. ‘Okay. Er… John, why don’t you take the tarpon? I haven’t a hope of getting a fly under those trees.’ ‘Like I have?’ John snorted.
Jose grabbed the end of his leader. ‘Leave it to me, man. Just jump in and keep close.’

David breathed out. ‘Bloody hell,’ he said quietly, feeling the hairs on the back of his neck and hands start to prickle. His body shook involuntarily at the memory of that silhouetted figure glaring through the darkness at him.

Greg bit the hook off the line, slid the shot and float off and tied on the mepps. He carefully flipped back the reel’s bail arm and flung the spinner towards the centre of the lake. Over the next half an hour, he became quite proficient at lobbing the spinner for up to 40 yards into the lake and winding it back at different speeds, as he had been told to do in a magazine article he had read about spinning.
