Peter finally managed to string enough words together to give everyone an idea what had taken place out on Bharp. His friends mostly greeted the tale with alcohol-fuelled ribaldry, but not so the locals. One of the ghillies thrust a large glass of whisky into his hand.
‘Drink that, Peter, I reckon you need it. You see, you don’t stay out on Bharp after dark. Everyone round here knows that.’
The ghillie shrugged. ‘It’s just something you don’t do.’
‘Who are those … people out there? I take it they are people?’
The ghillie nodded. ‘Yes. Or at least w

‘Vot? Zere must be, Patrick. Vot has happened to my eels?’
‘I really don’t know, Mister Schmidt. I tell you what, I’ll have a look under the deck boards. There might be something down there.’
A couple of the other ghillies came aboard and helped him, while Herr Schmidt looked on with increased bewilderment as it became obvious that the search would prove fruitless.
‘But vere have my eels gone?’ Herr Schmidt bleated, utterly bereft at this turn of events. His wife didn’t look too impressed either.
Patrick stood up, removed his cap and scratched his he

‘I guess a bear’s gotta do what a bear’s gotta do,’ he thought ruefully, mimicking Steve’s voice in his head. He just prayed that vole hunting would keep the animals occupied for the rest of the trip so that he could concentrate on the steelhead, and catch up on much needed sleep.
There was plenty of other tundra wildlife to go with the bears. They saw several bald eagles, one so close to the boat that the party drifted by underneath the branch on which it was perched. There were foxes, one of which was already turning into its silver winter coat, and three S

‘Perhaps not as fresh as some, but it’s not too bad, sir.’
The major played it well and patiently, which was surprising after this morning’s performance. This would be the fish of Murdo’s career, he knew that for certain, the one he would remember into his old age and tell his grandchildren about. And if he had to choose an angler to be on the other end right now, he would look no further than Major Jackson. He was, without question, the very best man for the job. ‘How long’s it been, Murdo?’
‘About 20 minutes, Major. He must be getting tired now.’

There was no equipment in the boat for handling large fish. Steve wouldn’t allow a gaff anyway, because all his fish went back alive, unless they specifically wanted one to eat, a category the lemon shark did not fit into. The only aid they had was the boatman’s gloves.
‘Can you grab its tail?’ Steve asked, deciding that was the best place for the boatman, it being furthest away from the teeth end. ‘No way I’m touching any part of that fish!’

‘I do not flaming believe it!’ roared John. ‘Tell me this isn’t happening, for God’s sake!’
‘I’m afraid it is. Come on, let’s go and help the jammy sod!’
‘We’ll never hear the end of this, you know? He’ll be insufferable for the rest of the week.’
The fish was quite coloured, having been in the river for perhaps three or four weeks. Robin played it expertly, landed it, had his photograph taken and then returned it unharmed to the river, whereupon it swam serenely back into the pot. Now came the time John and Mike had been dreading.
‘Just shows, you d

When filming had finished, the producer came over to Mark.
‘Well, I think we’ve finished with the pike now. We’d better get her back into the river here. There seems plenty of life left in her.’
Since permission is required to move fish to make sure that diseases are not spread unintentionally between rivers, both Mark and the television company had agreements to return fish to the water where they were caught. So the pike was driven back to the original fishing spot, where Mark looked it over once more to make sure it was okay to release, despite the two

‘Really? Which rod?’

‘There, it went again,’ said Terry.
‘I didn’t see anything,’ said Ron.
‘Definitely!’ said Frank. ‘Just a tap, tap on the tip.’

‘All right, you stay here and be moribund. I’ll climb down and do it. Someone’s got to show willing.’
Robin made his way gingerly down the cliff path and arrived just above the big rock at the top of the run. There was another, smaller boulder about 20 yards below and he was quite right: at this height of water, you could see there was a small pot that might conceivably hold a fish, if there were any fish to hold.
Robin threw a couple of speculative short casts, presumably in case anything was holding just in front of him. From their vantage point, Mike an

Rick was staring stoically at his balloon when he noticed it dip momentarily under the surface, then it came back and stayed still. Moments later, a sharp fin scythed through the water and circled the float.
‘Bloody hell!’ cried Ray from the other end of the boat. ‘Look at the size of that!’
The fin disappeared as the fish dived and Rick picked up his rod. The balloon bobbed a couple of times, then shot under and line began to scream off the big multiplier reel.
Rick let the fish run while he put the rod butt in the fighting pad, then engaged the reel’s

‘And they’re all mahseer down there?’
‘Not all, but they are mostly mahseer.’
‘Some of them, yes,’
‘Hey!’ Mark looked around to make sure no one else was listening. ‘Pity we can’t fish down there now. I mean, that’s what you call serious ground baiting, isn’t it?’
Gagan put a hand on his shoulder. ‘Now, it’s extremely interesting you should say that, because there’s something I’ve wanted to do here for a very long time. If you are agreeable, I think that time has arrived.’ MAHSEER AND FUNERAL PYRES
‘Er … you’re not thinking of knocking someone o

They donned jackets, over-trousers, caps and hoods, and walked down to the landing stage at the edge of Finlough. Peter was waiting for them, dressed as though he was about to attempt a walk to the North Pole, and the only thing out of place with the whole scenario was the wide grin across their ghillie’s face.
‘Morning. Ready to go fishing, then?’
‘Peter, you’re joking, aren’t you? I wouldn’t walk down the riverbank, let alone go out in a boat on the lough in this lot.’
‘Well now, I’ve fished here all my life and I’ve not lost an angler yet. I dare say

When the pictures were developed they were classics: Mark with his wild professor’s hair and the goonch all piggy eyed, bizarrely whiskered and menacing. But Mark couldn’t quite fix the man-eater tag to his ugly protagonist. While it would never displace mahseer as the Indian fisheries jewel, he couldn’t help having a sneaking admiration for the misunderstood monster.
ARCTIC SALMON AND ICEBERGS
An iceberg was responsible for the most famous maritime disaster of all time, but you wouldn’t normally expect one to play a major role in a salmon-fishing trip, ev

Gagan produced a large lump of mutton, which Mark impaled on the hook. They then waited for the fire to do its work, until it was time to kick the remnants into the river, just as had happened yesterday.
‘Be ready to cast out your bait,’ said Gagan, ‘right into the middle of the fish. One of them will most definitely take the sheep meat.’
In went the charred timber and what was left of the sheep, the pungent smell of burnt mutton pervading the air. Mark waited, poised for the action to start.
Nothing happened! The wood floated away on the current and th

The first thing George noticed was that Peter’s local forecast had turned out to be accurate: the wind had, indeed, swung from a cold easterly into the warmer south. Even so, the surrounding hills funnel the wind down the Delphi and swirl it round Finlough, making boat handling and casting very difficult in stormy weather. Peter was a past master at holding the boat’s drift, but George’s first cast was intercepted by a sudden cross-wind and collapsed in a spaghetti heap a few yards in front of him. He muttered under his breath a heartfelt what the hell are we do

At that time of year, the sun went down quickly and it was quite dark by 6 o’clock. Having landed a goonch at 4.30, Steve was happy to pack away his gear and return to camp for one more night under the stars before the long journey home. However, Seban and Bola suggested one more move downstream and a final cast into a pool they hadn’t fished in before, at the head of a series of shallow rapids.
The sun was already low behind the hills and the light was beginning to fade. Steve had just suggested five more minutes when the clutch on his Shimano Calcutta reel

Mark climbed out of the fighting chair and took hold of the marlin’s bill, which enabled Don to use both hands to work the hook free.
‘No problem, I take pictures,’ said a heavily accented voice from behind. Mark looked back over his shoulder to see a grinning Japanese taking photographs.
‘Okay, that’s enough,’ Don said. ‘Let her go back now.’
The fish stayed beside the boat looking at them for a few moments, then sank down, twisted away and disappeared.
The Japanese shook Mark’s hand vigorously. ‘Very good. We catch huge fish, yes?’
Mark made all

‘That’s one hell of a fish, too,’ said Steve. ‘Biggest tarpon I’ve ever seen, on this or any other boat out of the Keys.’
Colin had dropped the rod and was leaning on the boat, muscles screaming with exhaustion but with an unbelievable feeling of achievement in his head. Adrenalin was coursing round his veins faster than he had never experienced before, and he couldn’t speak for the moment. He was just staring down at the monstrous tarpon in front of him.
Peter held the end of the tape against the fish’s tail, while Steve measured up the lateral line to it

AMAZING FISHING STORIES
Then it all went wrong again. The fish suddenly woke up, turned around and shot straight out of the second pool into the one below. The two pools were separated by a stone croy, on which was growing a substantial sycamore bush, which in normal water wasn’t a problem. As though the salmon knew all this, it turned left and took the line behind the croy.
‘That’s enough,’ Hughie called out. ‘I can’t get past the tree and the river’s getting too dangerous. Time to break off and get the hell out of here!’
‘No way!’ Simon took the huge

David shook his head. ‘When I was a lad, an old ghillie told me he’d been on the island and seen ghostly figures there; others have too, down the years. I have been on there, a long time ago, but it felt too spooky, so I just leave the place alone these days.’
Kenny nodded. ‘There’s certainly an atmosphere out there. I have to admit to not liking the place very much myself.’
‘You’re not alone, Kenny,’ John grunted. ‘The ruddy sea trout don’t seem that keen, either!’
SILHOUETTE IN THE RIVER
Sea trout fishing at night is incredibly exciting, but it can

The car screeched to a halt so abruptly that Charles nearly hit his head on the windscreen.
Charles told his story to an increasingly incredulous O’Reilly. When he had finished, the man said nothing, turned the car round and drove back the other way. Charles asked him a couple of times where they were going, but the proprietor remained silent and stony faced.
They reached the track and turned down towards the cottage, the car bouncing around on the potholed surface. Soon the cottage came into view and O’Reilly stopped the car beside it, whereupon it became

With Coke drunk and banana swallowed, Colin sat in the stern seat as Captain Steve opened up the engines and headed up Big Pine Key for Bahia Honda bridge. Colin waited for his stomach to reject the concoction, together with last night’s beer, but the further they motored, the better he felt. In fact, by the time they were in the shadow of the bridge, he had to admit that he’d never felt better on a boat before. Not that that would be difficult, but his guts were quite settled now and even his head was losing its sense of panic. As the boat was positioned to sta

‘Yes, I was afraid you’d say that.’
‘Are you alright?’ David asked, as the man’s face had gone pale. ‘Look, what’s all this about?’
